Her first book (1930) was a collection of poems, and throughout her life she considered herself primarily a poet rather than a novelist. Their story is dramatized in the 2018 film Green Book, the name of a travel guide for black motorists in the segregated United States. Among the most renowned writers of the renaissance is poet Langston Hughes, whose first work was published in The Brownies' Book in 1921. He first received attention in the 1922 publication The Book of American Negro Poetry. The region and its boundaries have varying definitions, but it is generally considered a band through the center of the Deep South, although stretching from as far north as Delaware to as far west as East Texas.
